The Social Security Administration recently announced that Supplemental Security Income (SSI) recipients will soon receive their COVID-19 impact stimulus check. The recipients will receive their payment just as they normally receive their SSI benefits, either through direct deposit, Direct Express debit card, or by paper check.

The Social Security Administration will not consider this stimulus check as income to recipients and the payments are excluded from resources for 12 months.

SSI Recipients with No Qualifying Children
SSI recipients with no qualifying children do not need to take any action to receive their payment, even if they did not file a tax return in 2018 or 2019. The payment will be automatic.

Special Rules for SSI Recipients with Qualifying Children
SSI recipients who receive benefits and who did not file a tax return for 2018 or 2019 and who have qualifying children under age 17 should register at the IRS’s webpage to receive payment.

These recipients with qualifying children should go to this web portal to fill out a “Non-Filers” form (This website may be slow due to the large volume of people attempting to use it). The form requires basic information such as the recipient’s name, mailing address, Social Security number, and banking information for direct deposit. The recipient will also need to provide their qualifying child’s name and Social Security Number and their relationship to the recipient or the recipient’s spouse.

Once the form is submitted, it will be forwarded to the IRS to compute and send out the payment. SSI Recipients will receive $1,200 plus $500 per dependent child. SSI beneficiaries should complete this form as soon as possible or risk a delay in receiving their $500 payment per qualifying child.

The U.S. Treasury anticipates that all SSI recipients will receive their payments no later than early May. You can check the status of your payment here.
